Skin Cancer Removal

Skin Cancer is the leading reported form of cancer worldwide, with over one million cases diagnosed each year.  Skin cancer is most prevalent on exposed areas of skin like the scalp, ears, face and hands but can affect any part of the body.  Because of this frequent screenings are essential to catching and removing potentially dangerous lesions.  If you have a suspicious skin growth or lesion it is important to consult with a plastic surgeon or dermatologist to understand your options.

HOW IS SKIN CANCER DIAGNOSED?

Microscopic evaluation of a tissue sample must be done to diagnose your type of skin cancer.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SKIN CANCERS?

  1. Lesions on the skin can be benign such as nevi (moles) or skin tags. Skin cancer is a malignant lesion which may spread through the body.
  2. Scaly lesions called squamous cell carcinoma are growths of the uppermost portion of the skin, or epidermis.
  3. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of cancer and it also occurs in the epidermis. These growths are typically round and pearly or darkly pigmented.
  4. Melanoma may be distinguished by its pigmented blackish or brownish coloration and irregular and ill-defined borders. This is the most serious form of skin cancer as it occurs in the deepest portion of the epidermis making it the most likely form to spread quickly in the skin and to other parts of the body.
  5. There are other rare types of cancers on the skin.

HOW IS SKIN CANCER REMOVED?

There are many ways to remove skin cancer. The goal of a plastic surgeon is always minimal disfigurement to your appearance. Surgical excision may be done to cut the lesion from the skin if it is a small contained lesion. In some cases skin cancer can be much like an iceberg where what you see on the surface is only a small portion of the growth. In these cases, a specialized technique called “Mohs surgery” may be recommended. Your plastic surgeon or dermatologist may also order a “frozen section” whereby the cancerous lesion is removed and microscopically examined prior to wound closure to ensure all cancerous cells have been removed. Once the cancer is removed your wound will be closed. In some cases reconstruction may be necessary using a local flap of nearby healthy skin. When local tissue cannot be used for reconstruction, a free flap may be recommended if the resulting defect of the cancer removal is broad, large or deep. A free flap requires microsurgery to reconstruct the skin cancer site using skin and possible fat and muscle from other areas of the body. If supporting structures are affected, bone or cartilage grafts may also be necessary.

  • “I recently went to Mesos to have a laser peel done.  The staff did a wonderful job at explaining what was going to happen before , during and after the procedure.  This was an important component as I work full time.   I especially appreciated that they are very honest and realistic about results you can achieve from their services.  I felt that they under promised and over delivered!  I wanted to write this so that if someone out there needs reassurance like I did, that you will be very happy the day you see your ” before” and “after” pictures.”

  • “…very truthful and informative. He let me know what to expect so there were no surprises. He explained to me the worst case scenarios (including possible remedies) and he explained best case scenarios. My results thus far have exceeded what I had imagined. He was personable, professional and his staff really put me at ease. Follow-up appointments were relaxed and he gave me a chance to talk and ask questions. I also felt that he and his nurses listened to me and addressed anything I did not understand. I would highly recommend him.”
